EAGLE HARBOUR SAILING SCHOOL
SUMMER PROGRAMS

2010

Eagle Harbour Yacht Club offers a wide variety of sailing programs for all ages and abilities.  Our club is located in beautiful West Vancouver, at the entrance to Howe Sound.  From our sheltered harbour, sailors not only have the privilege of sailing in one of the most scenic areas of Vancouver, but also of learning one of the best sports in the world (our humble opinion!).  Sailing is an increasingly popular sport which offers everything from enjoyment of the outdoors, practical knowledge and skills which can be applied in all areas of life.  Come join us at EHYC and discover what you’ve been missing!

Our sailing programs follow the standard curriculum set by the Canadian Yachting Association (CYA), which is recognized worldwide as one of the top national sailing authorities. Sailing schools across Canada follow and recognize the CYA certification levels, so the instruction you will receive is recognized throughout Canada and overseas. Our dedicated team of young CYA certified coaches have many years of experience on the water to share with our students through our fun, learning oriented programs.  While we emphasize fun, safety is a priority.  We hope to develop in our students a love of sailing.
Our programs also provide strong sailing skills with which some graduates have gone on to highly successful careers in the sport.  Beth Calkin sailed for Team Canada in the 2000 Olympics, and Nikola Girke represented Canada at the 2004 Athens Olympics in the 470 class and at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the RSX windsurfer class (www.nikolagirke.com). Nikola is currently training for London 2012.  Both Beth and Nikola learnt to sail at EHYC.

 CYA programs at EHYC

Beginner (White Sail I and II)

White Sail programs offer the chance for sailors with little or no experience to be introduced to sailing in our popular Pirate Dinghies.  Basic sailing skills such as rigging, points of sail, and sail trim and helming, along with safety measures like righting a capsized boat are the focus. .  The White Sail I and II courses are designed as a fun, instructive introduction to sailing with an emphasis on developing practical skills.  Novice sailors enter at White Sail I and then progress onto White Sail II.

Beginner (White Sail III)

White Sail III is for sailors who have completed White Sail II and works on mastering the basic skills of sailing.  In addition to perfecting their helming and crewing skills, sailors in White Sail III get the chance to sail exciting new boats including Bytes and Laser >>s.  White Sail III is designed to refine basic skills and to get sailors ready for Bronze programs.

Intermediate (Bronze IV, V)

Once you have mastered the basics of sailing taught in the White Sail programs, you will be ready for the challenge of the Bronze levels.  These courses are taught in the high performance Byte, Laser and Laser >> dinghies.  In Bronze IV, you will learn how to sail without a rudder, how to sail backwards, and many other advanced techniques.  Advanced sail theory is also a large component of the course.  Bronze V introduces the excitement of sailing with a spinnaker and trapezing, and continues to expand your knowledge of advanced seamanship.  Students in the Bronze programs are encouraged to participate in the many local regattas during the summer to experience the thrill of racing in Vancouver’s youth circuit.

Racing (Silver VI)

Silver is for sailors who have complete Bronze and introduces sailors to the fun and excitement of racing!  There is currently no Silver booked for Summer 2010, but if there is enough interest in this course, Eagle Harbour will be running a combined Silver program with WVYC.  Please contact our office at 604 921 7636 or email us at ehyc@ehyc.org if you are interested!
Further details of the White Sail, Bronze and Silver programs are available on the Canadian Yachting Association’s website  http://www.sailing.ca/education_and_training/learn_to_sail/

Youth Summer Schedule...Ages 9-17

ALL SUMMER PROGRAMS ARE FROM 9 AM TO 4 PM WEEKDAYS, INCLUDING HOLIDAYS.   ALL STUDENTS MUST BE ABLE TO SWIM!

Our fantastic youth programs run throughout the summer and give young sailors the opportunity to have a great time out on the water.  Every session includes a multitude of games both on shore and on the water, a BBQ and much more.  At the end of each session, we have our traditional cruise to Bowen Island for our Bake Day (weather permitting). Also, during the program parents and siblings are given an opportunity to go out on a 34 foot sailboat and take pictures and videos of their children during the lessons. Several morning and afternoon Photo Shoots are scheduled during each session, and for a $25 donation to the EHYC Junior Sailing Club, you’ll have this unique opportunity to get some great pics of the kids!

Additional Youth Opportunities...

  Racing Clinic

This year we are offering seasonal training in conjunction with the newly created North Shore Race Team. These programs are run year round. The Spring and Fall seasons are very popular for the North Shore Race Team, consisting of two training periods a week and several regattas during the summer sailing season. For more information please contact Graeme Clendenan at director@northshoresailingteam.com

  High School Sailing Clubs

This year we are offering school sponsored sessions weekday afternoons from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM for any school who wishes to organize a sailing group. Contact the EHYC office at 604-921-7636 if you’re interesting in looking into sessions for your school.

Commodore’s Cup

EHYC traditionally has a large contingent of its Summer Sailing School students participate in the Commodores Cup Regatta, to be held during the week of August 30th to September 3rd. The fee of $200 includes the registration fee for RVYC, coach supervision, and use of the EHYC club dinghies.

The spring and fall sailing, and Commodore’s Cup are non-certification programs.  Sailors can expect top quality coaching in the race clinics, and excellent supervision in all three programs, but no evaluations will be conducted during these sessions.

Spring and Fall sailing will run on the given dates from 12 to 4 pm.

Group Packages

Custom group packages can be arranged at Eagle Harbour again in 2010.  Schools and youth groups (such as Girl Guides, Scouts, Cadets, etc.) are invited to set up a group sailing session.  These custom designed sessions cater to the goals of your group, and are scheduled at your convenience.  Whether you want to bring a gym class out for a series of lessons aimed at certification, or you simply want to bring your group out for a one day field trip, Eagle Harbour is the place to go!

EHYC Junior Sailing Club Membership

EHYC has a very active Junior Sailing Club. Annual membership is $95, with a $25 credit if you attended one of our Summer Sailing School sessions. Junior Members who’ve earned their White Sail III credentials can take out the club dinghies anytime they are not in use during the sailing school. Supervised sailing, social events, inter-club racing, camping trips, and fun sailing with lots of new friends are all benefits of joining the EHYC Junior Sailing Club.

Youth Regattas

One of the best parts of dinghy sailing in Vancouver, is the chance to race in the many regattas occurring throughout the sailing season.  These events range from relaxed, single days spent racing against sailors from other local clubs, action-packed provincial or national competitions. Eagle Harbour is proud to participate in many regattas throughout the season, and we encourage our sailors to join us in showing off our sailing skills.
Additional events may be added to the schedule as they are announced by the hosting yacht clubs.

Adult Programs... Age 18 & Up

We are offering both Beginner and Intermediate Adult sailing lessons in 2010.

Beginner Lessons are offered as a series of six lessons.  The cost is $240.00 for the series, or $50 per lesson if individual lessons are preferred.

Intermediate Lessons are offered in a series of eight lessons.  The cost is $320.00 or $50 per lesson if individual lessons are preferred.

Sessions can be held Monday through Thursday from the beginning of May to the end of September, from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM each evening or on weekends if preferred.

We do not have regular lessons scheduled for adults, but we are happy to offer them to individual groups of a minimum of 3 students per session!

Private Lessons

Private Lessons are the quickest way to become a proficient dinghy sailor. Private Lessons are also ideal if you want to tailor a particular program to your schedule and abilities.  Private lessons are taught on a one-on-one basis, and target whatever areas of practical sailing you would like to practice or learn.

Fees are $50 per hour, and two people can share the same private lesson. Contact EHYC at 604 921 7636 or email us at ehyc@ehyc.org if you’d like more information or to schedule sessions.

Please note that there are no fixed dates for Adult and Private Lessons and the timing of sessions is dependent on the availability of coaching staff.
